B&T VP-9 Update: Importability

Recently, The Firearm Blog ran an article on the B&T VP-9.  There have been a variety of comments and questions regarding the potential sale of the gun in the United States of America.

The importation of sound suppressors into the USA are currently limited to government sales only (military and law enforcement.)  The information we’ve received suggests that ARMATI-USA will be working on importing a variety of B&T products, but the VP-9 will not be one of them.  Should this change, we will be sure to provide updates.

What about importing them without the suppressor tube (the serialized part IIRC) and just manufacture a tube in the US?

Well, they’d still need “enough points” to get approved by the ATF for importation, for instance, it’s small, the sights are fixed, that’s points off (they could just do what Glock do, and put adjustable sights on the guns to get them imported legally, then put the fixed sights on when they’re in the US).

I thought That only applied to semi autos?

          wrong click. =P

I thought that 922r only applied to rifles? Not handguns

        • sianmink

A whole different and nonsensical set of rules applies to handguns.

the “saturday night special” points menu?

          • Geodkyt

Exactly. That’s why the various Hungarian made PP and PPK clones were imported with the stupid “target grip” left grip panels, TT-33s get hacked up to have thumb safeties added, and why Glocks used to be imported with flimsy plastic adjustable “target” sights

i can understand the lack of safety, small barrel, small caliber, as it would be “easy to conceal and fire”

but why were fixed sights a “bad” thing? much like a barrel shroud let you hip fire from the shoulder thingie that goes up? with 30 caliber assault ghost magazine clip?

Probably because all pistols with adjustable sights are used only for sporting purposes whereas all pistols with fixed sights are deadly assault weapons used to kill and maim people. 😉

          • sianmink

            Exactly.

I don’t know why we doesn’t have more of these class of pistols… I mean, modern silenced weapons for REALLY quiet shots… I had read somewhere that racking welrod’s bolt was more loud than firing it…
