Ammo Prices: 3/28/2014

We are trying a new weekly article concept. With the constant availability and price fluctuations of ammunition we are going to try and make your life a bit easier. Each week we are going to research current offerings at online ammunition dealers and display *bulk* prices for a number of common calibers.

We will show the lowest price we can find at the dealer (excluding reloaded ammunition) for each caliber. Please keep in mind that the prices and availability were validated as of the time this post is written (the information is not real time), and both of those factors can change. Also, prices posted are exclusive of shipping (unless the vendor includes that in the price). The number in parentheses following the price is the cost per round.

As always, if you have any suggestions (or you find that a dealer is out of stock or the price has significantly changed), please comment below.

Prior to that he was a paramedic somewhere in DFW, also doing some Executive Protection work between shifts. Now that those exciting days are behind him, he has embraced his inner “Warrior Hippie” and assaults 14er in his sandals and beard, or engages in rucking adventure challenges while consuming craft beer. To fund these adventures, he writes medical software and builds websites and mobile apps. His latest venture is as one of the founders of; a search engine for all things gun related. He hopes that his posts will help you find solid gear that will survive whatever you can throw at it–he is known (in certain circles) for his curse…ahem, ability…to find the breaking point of anything.

Freedom Munitions does have 1000 rounds of 380 and for only $350. granted its reman but for “bulk”it doesn’t matter.

Also, add 300 BLK to this list please as I know that’s a round a lot of us keep an eye out for

    • Joe

+1 to 300BLK!! Please & THANK YOU for doing this list.

    • jheryko

Another vote for 300BLK. Thanks for the list

    • Doc Rader

We will look at adding 300 BLK next week!

  • Gryphonlore

This is a wonderful idea, keep it up.

  • ColaBox

If anyone is looking for some good cheap .223, I just bought a 500rd case of Wolf Classic “bi-metal” for $140.00 at The Ammunition Store. Ran through about 300rds of it so far without any issue.

    • Doc Rader

That *is* a good price. The Sportsman’s Guide also still has 500rd lots for ~$150.

      • Suburban

WIth a coupon code, Sportsmans’s Guide may come out cheaper.

  • john huscio

    No aim surplus?

    • We only have room for so many so not every ammo company will be listed.

    • Doc Rader

Hi, John! I actually did look at AIM Surplus, but they didn’t have any bulk lots in the above calibers. This is specifically a compilation of vendors that advertise and sell in lots of 500 or 1000. You could obviously get 25 boxes of 20 rounds to build your own brick at a number of other vendors…

  • bbqribman

FYI, you might want to check on your scripts/method for 223. In one case you have steel case as the cheapest on a site (bulkammo). But at sgammo for example, your cheapest is brass. They have steel for 1000 at $275. Anyway, not sure what your baseline was supposed to be, brass or steel.

    • Doc Rader

Thanks for pointing that out! The overall goal is “cheapest at vendor by caliber for a lot size” irrespective of casing (aside from reloaded or remanufactured–which we are going to avoid for now due to wide range of quality).

  • Jeff Smith

To the person(s) that thought of this idea: thank you. Things like this are one of the many reason I’ve been a regular reader of this site for years now.

  • Sabertooth88

This is my first post, but I’ve been reading for years. This is an excellent idea, thanks guys! Keep it up, the recent changes have been great.

  • engjin

Appreciate the effort but why not just post links to the better ammo price search engines? I checked a few after I read this and immediately beat the prices above on the same or better quality ammunition.

    • TFB_Reader

    • Doc Rader

Engjin, that is a valid observation and there are a vast number of them.

What I think this offers over that is a quick at a glance compilation. Not everyone wants to troll the ammo search engines. And while the data is less stale on those sites, especially regarding price, ours will give a quick at a glance availability (right now a couple of the search engines actually show different results for the same query).

We will definitely be fine tuning this as we go! There may be a better day of the week to harvest data (e.g. based on manufacturer’s shipping) to decrease the volatility of the information, etc.

      • Caleb_Grey

whats the point of showing out of date prices of crap ammo?

        • Doc Rader

Not all of the prices are out of date (though yes, some will become stale), and “crap ammo” is pretty subjective.

Personally, I like to shoot. A lot. And I’m not as picky about the quality so long as it is not reloads or remanufactured. I’m going to clean my weapons anyway after the range, so if I have to spend 5 more minutes with a toothbrush scrubbing out some red varnish, I’m okay with that. Especially if it saves me 5-10% of the cost.

If you subscribe to this blog via some sort of feed reader, you can hop in as soon as the article posts, and the prices should be pretty fresh.

  • stephen

I love this idea. I look forward to seeing it as part of your regular programming.

  • DougE

Thank you for compiling all this info. I have my list of places to check but this is a much more comprehensive list and compared side by side.

  • hkryan

I would be okay with you NOT listing Cheaper Than Dirt…

    • josephplumbmartin

why NOT list cheaper than dirt..?

      • gunslinger

CTD has a bad rep after raising their prices after the tragic events in CO and CT. people felt they were “gouged” and taken advantage of.

at least that’s what i gather after listening on other forums.

        • chadderz2u

I will have to say ctd is a great company despite the increase seen in the sector of Business. They are a company with real employees which I bet felt like the gold rush was BACK. If we’re going to be upset…. let’s at least focus on the right cause. Radical people aren’t going away but how we react and when we react will always be scrutinized. peace

  • PuddleMonkey

Sweeeeeeeeeet! Gonna use this right now to snag 1,000 rounds of 45acp!

  • Blake

When I’m looking for ammo, I just ask AmmoSeek. Also Brass Badger keeps tabs on GreatWall-Mart’s local stocks. Maintaining a similar list here seems to amount to a duplication of effort…

However I think it would be a really cool thing for TFB to maintain a separate graph of ammo prices over time bases on datapoints from sources like the sites mentioned above, and occasionally comment on the state of the ammo market as reflected by the data.

    • Doc Rader

Blake, that is actually the intention. We are storing the prices and after a few weeks we should be able to show some interesting analytics.

  • Scott Sumner

    Really like it! Thank you

  • JumpIf NotZero

5 or so immediate requests for 300blk, not a mention of 6.8… But I’m told 300blk is a fad.

  • Pseudo

Nothing like market statistics. Keep it up. Would it be feasible to publish .csv files with the post?

    • Doc Rader

      I will look into that.

    • Federalist

+1 on providing raw and historical data so others can easily track and analyze this historically.

  • Enysubscription

I know many people have said this, but thank you for all of the hard work in putting this list together. It makes it easy to come to one place a get a good idea where to buy the least expensive ammo.

  • Jack Morris

This is an awesome idea. You guys have the best firearms blog on the internet! Thank you for keeping it high quality!

  • Thanks great idea

  • derris already does this

  • gunslinger

  • jmkcolorado

you might want to consider adding cabela’s (for 9mm, at least). consistently low prices and high availability (it’s pretty much the only place i buy 9mm for that reason).

    • jmkcolorado

and, this is a GREAT idea. like the intent to keep historical data.

  • Hopsaregood

I must be shopping the wrong Cabelas because I find their prices HIGH on anything gun related.

  • Full Name

This helps to illustrate even more clearly that THE PANIC IS OVER. There is tons of ammo available, and the prices are even almost back to pre-Obama levels.

  • torr10

I hate to say it….but Walmart is cheaper on smaller quantities than most of these prices. I got two boxes of 333 rds of 22 for $35, together. 7.62 x 39, 20 rds for $5.77.

  • NakedTruth

Suggestions to make this service even more valuable:
    1. Other sites, including and, show “cheapest by vendor
by caliber” but do not filter by case. If you want to differentiate
yourself, maybe offer to filter out the steel / bimetal / aluminum as well as the reloads / reman.
    2. Include .300, 5.45 mm, 6.5 mm, 6.8 mm.
    3. Include and maybe MIMC as sources of handgun ammo.

  • larry

Wheres the Rimfire listings? 22 magnum 22LR ect.

    • Doc Rader

Hi Larry. I just generically stuck .22LR into the “rifle” section (which I know is not technically correct but saved having to have another section for just one item). If there is enough interest in seeing more rimfire, I may do a third category and show the weird lot sizes that they come in.

  • Alliance Ammunition

Tom, if you are from DFW – please list Alliance Ammunition at – WE HAVE 22LR FOR 66% OF EVERYONE ELSE AND WE ARE A TYPE 06 FFL!

Help support us as we support all of you! I second the CTD comment too as I WAS a long time customer with bulk from them still from the 90’s. I will never buy ammo from them again with $100 for 22LR. Nobody is charging that except those who want to profit off of everyone without ethics.

    • Doc Rader

Hi there Alliance! I was in DFW many years ago, but no longer… That said, look for your ammo listing this week… 🙂

  • Tony McMillan
