Cabot Guns: The Left and The Right

Now we all love TFB for its motto “Firearms Not Politics,” and so I will stick to the factual details of these one-of-a-kind 1911s made by the folks at Cabot Guns. These are just too unique and have to be shown outside the confines of SHOT Show.

On the left, we have a left-handed Jones Deluxe with a scrimshaw engraving of Piers Morgan on one grip, and of President Barack Obama on the other.

On the right, we have a Jones Deluxe with a scrimshaw engraving of Ted Nugent on one grip, and of President George W. Bush on the other.

The scrimshaw work on the ivory grips was done by hand, courtesy of Darrel Morris.

These pistols are not for sale, but I’m sure they could get a pretty penny for them.

On one hand, I would never pay money for a picture of Piers Morgan. On the other hand, a gun with Piers Morgan on it probably pisses Piers Morgan off immensely, so I’m a little torn on whether or not I like this.

Either way, beautiful craftsmanship on the guns. I’d love to own a Cabot if I had the money.

  • Colby

I certainly could have thought of better representatives of conservative ideology. I wonder why they didn’t pick real conservatives or substantive intellectuals like Ronald Regan or Barry Goldwater instead of an Republican party establishment figure and a charismatic wild man. Nothing against the “Nuge,” I admire his zest for life, but his antics tend to confirm the stereotypes with which the left tries to portray conservatives.

I refrain from commenting regarding the left.

OK, I’m done. No more politics here.

    • Colby

P.S. That’s not to say that I adopt all of the beliefs of the figures I mentioned. I can certainly appreciate the substance of someone’s intellect while still disagreeing with them in many ways, especially in areas where my faith leads me to differ.

    • Anonymoose

Ronald Reagan agreed with Piers and Obama on gun legislation though.

      • Darnit I can’t comment:-)

        • jamezb

          poke – poke
I think the politics cat is unbagged in this post, I’d love to hear what you wanted to say…

          • meow

          • jamezb

          • gunslinger

All right, how about “Cat Game?”

          • Karina

          • Nah better not—If anybody needs to stay within the rules it’s me:-)

          • gunslinger

maybe need your own sub-blog…??? 🙂

          • iksnilol

            I would totally read that.

I imagine Phil reviewing a modern pistol and going:

“It’s a fine pistol, but in my days we used a M2 on the roadblocks so I will give it 1 star. The “low” rating is due to its unsuitability as a service firearm.”

          • LOL—ok well I do have a pic like that. Here ya go. I’m behind the 50 cal
It was for a photo contest in a police magazine. The sign says speed limit strictly enforced:-)

Yes it’s a real M2—the Coast Guard loaned it to us.

          • iksnilol

You mean it was staged? My entire childhood is ruined…Ruined I tell you.

Yeah, I remember that picture, you showed it a year or two ago.

          • Yep afraid so. We did go shoot it after the photo if that helps:-)

          • gunslinger

Quick. Someone photoshop in the Apache helicopter speed enforcememt pic. And the truck with missile balloons fixed to the hitch

          • Hum wish I was better with photoshop! Just make one big picture.

          • I actually kept one going for some time. I’m too busy these days:-)

That and I hate mixing anything political with guns—not that it applies here.

      • theforgottenman

Reagan signed the FOPA which included the Hughes Amendment.

    • Probably staying with fairly recent history

      • Darrel Morris

This is correct. There were a lot of potential subjects discussed for both sides on this project. Ultimately, the decision was made to stick to recent personalities.

  • Steve Truffer

now if only they said the left one didn’t work…

    • Anonymoose

And had a tracking device which would automatically call the BATFE and tell them you are trying to assault chilluns if you pulled the trigger (regardless of where you actually are and where the gun is actually pointed).

  • Steve (TFB Editor)

HAHA, we had a debate if this was to political, but on the other hand it was also to much fun to ignore.

    • wetcorps

You know, I don’t follow a lot of firearm related blogs beside TFB because they all tend to end up being more about politics than firearms. The tempation is indeed strong enough to have you put a reminder in your slogan, so kuddos for keeping talking mainly about guns 🙂

      • Mark

Ditto. Being the commie lefty liberal gun owner I am, I love this blog because they actually talk about guns. While many comments often digress, the heart and soul of things here remains centered on form and function.

  • dan citizen

kudos for reporting this pair of firearms without getting political! So many would have avoided this or used it as fodder for a lame joke.

  • jamezb

I hear the right pistol is reasonably accurate most of the time, but the left is likely as not to print completely off target.

These are magnificently done, and I’d love to own a set, but being apolitical and completely disenchanted with various platforms of both partys, I think I’d just put some checkered walnut on there, toss the scrimshaw in the safe, buy a set of marching L&R tooled leather holsters and actually go shoot those royal blued beauties.

  • Brandon Montville

Kudos for including the Obama one. Speaks to your journalistic integrity!

  • DaveTheGreat

Kudos on covering a political topic in a nonpolitical manner. Tough to do, but I’m glad you did it.

    • gunslinger

although i don’t see how this is “political” it’s not about laws or court cases or anything. it’s a pair of firearms, one has a set of grips with images of a left public figure/personality and a left politician. the other has a right public figure/personality and a right politician. none of the actual politics were discussed.

now can we get a set with “law & Order” with pictures of Chuck Norris’ left and right legs?

  • theforgottenman

On the left gun they should have had Chairman Mao and Sara Brady. On the right should be anyone of the Founding Fathers and John Moses Browing.

    • brian

nope, if we are going to negative extremes, on the right they should’ve had rick perry and hitler.

      • Hitler was national socialist you fool.

        • brian

he hated communists, which is about as much related to the republican party as chairman Mao is related to the democratic party

          • He also railed against capitalism. You’re confusing leftists and communists as one and the same. A communist is leftist, but a leftist isn’t necessarily a communist.

          • brian

just to be clear, I was not trying to be logical, I was stepping to down to the original posters level of rationality for a minute. sorry if I didn’t get a great analogy…

          • All good. The matter of whether Hilter was left or right always has and always will be disputed. I guess nobody wanted to risk their life and ask him of his stance so they could document it for future Internet arguments 🙂

          • eric s

Since we already went there, the Nazi party was mostly left on the political spectrum. The left / right dynamic refers to government control. So a 100% left mentality is that the government controls all aspects of it’s citizen’s life and by contrast a 100% right government would be one that has no control. Since Hitler and the Nazi party nationalized a lot of the industry they fell on the left side of the spectrum. Not familiar with the social liberties allowed under the Nazi regime, but they’re prolly close in the upper left ‘authorian-socialist’ area.

          • /k/ommando

“So a 100% left mentality is that the government controls all aspects of it’s citizen’s life”

Unless it’s about birth control or being gay or whatever, then it’s okay.

          • gunslinger

“100% right government would be one that has no control”

Unless it’s about birth control or being gay or whatever, then it’s ok.

Just want to be fair and balanced.

          • Anonymoose

Try being gay in Nazi Germany. Also, the Nazis forced abortion on many “undesirable” peoples, while those who fit the SS’s ideal physical attributes were encouraged to have as many kids as possible.

          • Eric S

Hail and well met /K/omrade. Well, just because you call yourself a leftist/rightist does not mean you are. The truth of the matter is that the majority of folk fall in the middle of any given spectrum. Just take the idea of recreational drugs. Ideally a right leaning mentality would be all for it and a left leaning mentality would be against it, but yet here we are.

          • anon

Travis, you seem to be a fucking idiot. I will assume you are not a troll, and not stupid either. Just wrong.

There is no dispute. Hitler was an extreme right-winger. Always was, always has been, always will be. Anything YOU are doing to confuse yourself or other people about this is YOU putting your head in the sand / up your own ass, and don’t confuse that with there being any lack of consensus and FACTUAL history on this issue. The Nazis were not on the left. They were against the left. The Nazis were a right-wing party. You should remember that, and how and why they came to power and things got totally out of whack and went to hell and millions of people around the world DIED trying to fix it. The least you could do is fucking remember. The second least thing you could do is shut the fuck up when you don’t know what you are talking about.

Phil, this is history. Not politics.

            Now, back to guns.

          • “Travis, you seem to be a fucking idiot. I will assume you are not a troll, and not stupid either. Just wrong.”

Well there’s your argument out the window. Despite being 3 days late to the party.

Now wipe the spittle off your screen, and try and to maintain some calm sensibility like the rest of us adults in this conversation.

          • theforgottenman

“Every Communist must grasp the truth: Political power grows out of the barrel of a gun.”- Chairman Mao Zedong

“I don’t believe gun owners have rights”.-Sarah Brady, Hearst Newspapwers, Special Report,
            Oct., 1997.

Just dropping some knowledge on you. It’s good to know who the enemies of freedom are. Stay off the internet, stop trolling!

          • brian

it’s very scary to realize that there are more like you, ill-informed cowboy types who think “our freedom is under attack” by the leftists, and that the founding fathers are the symbol of the republican party, if anyone needs to get off the internet, it’s you buddy…

          • Anonymoose

Yes, political power grows out of the barrel of a gun. That’s why he took away all civilian-owned guns so the common people would have no political power.

        • tts

He was a Fascist who started out with the trappings of Socialism to gain power and widespread acceptance. By the late 30’s anyone caught publicly espousing the original 25 Socialist tenets of the NSDAP would be killed or put into a concentration camp.

Fascism is far Right and so yes Hitler would be a perfectly valid choice for a negative extreme example of a Right politician.

  • Timothy Chaffee

This is as political as I’ll get.
why does the left have piers morgan on it? And why isn’t JFK on one of grips? Lol
    either way, beautiful pistols!

  • Frosty_The_White_Man

Would it be too late for Lincoln vs Douglas pairing?

    • Eric S

A Burr – Hamilton pairing would have been hilarious as well, but given the short memory of the populace, I don’t think anyone prior to 1980 would be recognizable.
Also, would have put Feinstein instead of Obama, but that wouldn’t have worked well with Bush, who I would replace with Teddy Roosevelt

      • Darrel Morris

Hmmm…Hamilton- Burr would be a lot of fun.

  • noob

oh my god these are hilarious!

  • BryanS

Cabot guns makes VERY nice pieces, and all of the company reps i have met at shows have been great to speak with. They are a sponsor at a jeep show that I am a vendor at north of here in butler PA, I always make time to stop by and visually sample the wares.

  • avconsumer2

    Cabot Guns… fair & balanced™

  • The Forty ‘Twa

Please, please, please do not send Piers Morgan back to the UK. We don’t want him back!

    • mikewest007

I knew someone was going to say that. 😀

    • Anonymoose

How about we send him to North Korea then? I’m sure he’d fit in real well there. 😀

  • iksnilol

So let me get this straight. On one pistol is two persons I dislike and on the other there is two OTHER persons I dont like.

I would like a left handed 1911 though.

  • Victor

I could settle for having W. Bush engraved on both sides of the grip, but Ted Nugent? Barack O. Bama? Piers “of shit” Morgan? That’s just evil.

  • Blake

So, erm, is that the politically correct kind of ivory, or the dead elephant & smuggled out of Africa kind?

    • There’s still a small amount of ivory being sold from old stock. Also government regs allow small amounts of new Ivory to come into the country

  • Fruitbat44

I always have reservations about guns which are “too pretty to shoot,” but these are a very, very handsome pair.
“Artistic Representation of a Great American Debate” I think that’s kinda cool.

  • darkdestroyer

Cool looking 1911’s but I would ditch the grips on both of them.

  • Allen

Good reason this set is labeled Left and Right and not Liberal and Conservative.
