Midwest Industries SSR SCAR Rail Extension

scar ssr rail

Midwest Industries is selling a new version of the SCAR rail extension I previously mentioned last December.  The SSR SCAR rail extension requires the removal of the front sight, but gives the user a “full length monolithic top rail” in return.

The extension adds another 6″ of useable length to the accessory rails, and adds two QD sockets for push button swivels.  It is made of 6061 aluminum.  The extension weight is 8.5 ounces.

MSRP is $224.95.

Looks great to improve the sight radius.

I like the convenience and consideration of included flip-up front sights, but they really limit my choices of irons because of it.

Very cool product that I would love to try out!

Well… That’s a nice extension no doubt. But there are issues. One is the sight radius doesn’t matter with an optic so take that out. There is definitrely more room for a bipod. With a scope IMO your still stuck with a gun and barrel profile that will get 1 MOA with match ammo. I guess it make sense as a battle rifle setup sort of, you have more room to hold the gun. But IMO, if you want that style of gun, you SBR it and chop the barrel to 12.5″.

So, nice product. But it doesn’t solve the underlying issues of what role this gun is supposed to fill exactly.

I think this kind of product is more for the people that want to get that support hand way out front, with the thumb over grip in the modern high speed low drag shooting style. AFG under the barrel out front and a couple of rail covers and it would be set up nicely for that.

Not my thing, but I can see how it would appeal to some shooters.

What role is the gun supposed to fill?

Now they need to make one for the Sig 516/716!

I debated getting this. But instead went with the regular extended rail. I like keeping my stock BUIS.
