Heizer Defense to Ship in Fall 2013

Heizer Pocket Shotgun

Heizer Defense, the former business partner to Double Tap Defense, announced the Pocket Shotgun is set to ship in Fall 2013.  The new handgun is a single shot, top break pistol designed to fire .410 and .45 Colt ammo.

In the press release, Tom Heizer states:

It is important to know that we will only use Stainless Steel or Titanium frames. We believe that these are the safest and most durable alloys. In our opinion lighter metals do not provide the safest and most enjoyable experience that our consumers deserve. We will not allow the commercial distribution of a pistol until we are certain of the safety and the durability of the product. That is why we have chosen Stainless Steel as our base material.

Oddly, the Heizer website clearly indicates the Pocket Shotgun will come with either an “aluminium and stainless steel or titanium frame.”  Perhaps the website has not yet been updated to reflect an all stainless steel frame?

This looks just like the Double Tap except for the chambering/barrel. A compact derringer is a hard enough sell, and I’m pretty sure a single shot compact .410 is going to flop.

    • This another model and a new one. The original will be the primary gun marketed.

    • gunsandrockets

Is your objection to a single shot derringer or a single shot derringer in .45LC/.410?

A 000 buckshot .410 load sounds to me like a pretty good alternative for a single shot derringer when used for self-defense purposes. If hiking, a birdshot load would provide a pretty handy defense against snakes too.

I think the idea has potential. It’s just the price that turns me off.

      • BryanS

For the cost and weight, an LCP loaded with Gold Dot would do just fine.. and snakes i can avoid.

    • Louis Bethel

Xcept the DoubleTap is made from Aluminum.
I’ll keep my fingers intact and buy the Heizer Defense version.

      • Samuel Suggs

yeah aluminum isnt unsafe its just not durable against any of the damaging influences excerted on a barrel

  • Samuel Suggs

I think it would make an awsome beard gun

    • Samuel Suggs

      ): ): ):

  • Samuel Suggs

I actually think that this is a decent idea ive tried carrying my Bond ranger this way and it works great but it too heavy bye far also the single action just sucks, I dont care how many cowboy action competions youve won, single action will allways reqire you to regrip the gun for one handed operation. that being said I find the ergonomics of the pocket shotgun highly qestionable although I cannot acccurately speak from exspearence.

  • Samuel Suggs

Lets make this about the relative merits of 410 derrengers shall we

    • BryanS

      Merrits for?

      Self defense:
      -Better than a pointy stick

      -Makes squirrel a real challenge

      • Samuel Suggs

the pointy stick sounds better when you tell the story of a beer though so +1 to the pointy stick

  • Guest

enjoy this neat gif, am I the only one that gets mesmorisedwith anticipation waiting for it to change?

    • I don’t believe there will be any changes from this representation.

      • Samuel Suggs

yeah sorry tried to post the GIF and it just posted as a picture

  • Heizer Defense

Thanks for catching this. There has been some confusion about Heizer Defense and our server went out……old press releases came back.
For the record, Heizer Defense will not make a pistol with Aluminum.
Yes it’s cheaper to manufacture, and yes it is lighter.
But we don’t feel it is the right material for a small pistol……and we won’t put our name on a gun that is not safe, reliable, or durable.

We will make the Heizer Defense Pistol with Stainless Steel and Titanium.

And we will fix the website right away.
Folks can also keep up to date with us via Facebook if that’s their preference.

Have you considered making one with a longer barrel? something around 6″? Think that would be a great snake gun

      • Samuel Suggs

that already exsists its called the snake slayer 4 its got two four and a half inch barrels.http://bondarms.com/bond-arms-handguns/snake-slayer-iv/

        • phil

actually the judge from taurus is 5 shot. the governor from s&w is 6 and also can shoot 45acp.

          • Samuel Suggs

eh I guess its good to fact check even if you dislike the product, sorry

          • phil

im not fond of taurus either

      • Samuel Suggs

on a side note why do like to leave so many short comments on CNN

        • Bucking the Futz

Nobody reads long comments on CNN and at work I have to stick and move…….why do you ask? It’s nice to know I have a fan

    • David Sharpe

Will you come out with a longer barrel one, say 4.2 inches for the Canadian market?

    • J.T.

While this and the HD2 are obviously your way at getting back at Ray Kohout for the falling out you had over producing his design, other than the minor external changes, what changes did you make to get around the patents he has that are pending with the USPTO? Or did you work out a licensing agreement in litigation?

  • 2wheels

Now I just KNOW I’m gonna meet someone bragging about the “shotgun” they’ve got concealed in their pocket…

I really fail to see the point, few people want to carry a double shot derringer in a serious caliber for self defense, I bet even fewer people will be interested in a single shot “pocket shotgun” chambered in .410 (I’m assuming most people will buy this to shoot .410, not .45LC).

I don’t see too many of these getting sold.

    • Samuel Suggs

  • smartacus

they should make a 2.5″ only version

  • Mike F Di

considering the barrel length, I’d rather pack a small nine and have at least 6 SHOTS ready to go marching out versus one 410 pooping out a short barrel

    • Samuel Suggs

well this is certaintly interesting 410’s greatest issue in my opinion is not performance from short barrels but concsitency in penatration velocity and effectiveness check out some of this websites other matrial also http://www.410handguns.com/410_gel_results.html

    • Samuel Suggs

      poop lol

  • I will be doing a review of both guns in the not to distant future so I should be able to answer the questions people have posed so far.

    • Samuel Suggs

      Titanium or steel version

  • steveindajeep

msrp? sorry if i missed it?

  • Samuel Suggs

    really green green

  • DiverEngrSL17K

What about recoil attenuation? While the .410 is a far cry from the larger gauges in terms of recoil impulse and energy, I imagine it would still be quite a handful in a pocket gun like this.

I haven’t personally fired a pocket gun with that kind of load, so it would be interesting to hear about the experiences of those contributors who have actually done so.

  • Frosty_The_White_Man

For snakes and critters this looks fun. Probably not the smartest option when facing bipedal foes.

    • Samuel Suggs

      why is this your avatar?

      • otto skorzeny

why do you care? whats your problem

        • Samuel Suggs

I was just asking I am not the one who created an acount for the exspress purpose of qestioning my qestion

    • Samuel Suggs

or is it a cropped version of this either way its otto chillin in nurumburg

  • lal

I have the feeling that every post on this blog is about that stupid little shit pistol.

    • Vermin.308Winchester

Wait WTF it’s 242 pages long what are you even trying to say

  • Zius Patagus

I have one of those cobray top break, single shot 45/410 derringers that came out in the 80s. Try as I might I couldn’t really figure out what it is good for. It is quite worthless except as a conversation piece. But hey, it was dirt cheap. People will buy something useless if it cheap enough. I suspect people will buy the HD1 as and example of a oddity in the gun world only if it is cheap enough.
