LaRue PredatOBR in 7.62

20130117_145056

20130117_145115New for 2013, the LaRue Tactical in 7.62 is notable for it’s QD (quick-detachable) handguard. LaRue claims that after the rifle is reassembled that it will shoot a grouping within .25 MOA of the prior one before disassembly. The QD handguard feature is useful if you need to swap a barrel out quickly when you’re out in the field with limited tools.

The QD handguard switch allows the user to simply use their fingers to unlock two latches, one on each side.

Once the latches are open the handguard quickly slides off. A barrel change then requires a special wrench.

The entire rifle can be broken down and put into a 17″ long case. Barrels come in 14.5″, 16″, and 18″ lengths. In addition to 7.62, the PredatOBR is available for pre-order in 5.56. There is currently about a 1-year waitlist.

Any chance the hand gard will be offered seperarly?

It looks like the handguard requires a different upper to attach to. Who knows, I would buy one if they did.

I haven’t seen anything on that but I seriously doubt it.

  • gimmer

Any chance it’ll be less than $2k? ;)

      Not much of one—

The PredatOBR has a bolt on hand guard. This is the new Larue Suitcase Gun, which is designed to quickly break down.

I think it’s being said over on the LaRue forum on ARFCOM that they’re consolidating both the PredatOBR and the Suitcase gun line into one.

  • Practical over Tactical

I don’t think 7.62 is a practical round for a working gun, unless it’s being deployed in a precision role.

I dunno if I agree with that completely. But I get where you are going. I think that would depend on what the work is. CQB? OBR in 7.62 not my first choice. I think’s the platform weight and dimensions are more a factor in that line of work for example.

With the prior PredaTAR in mind, I keep mentally pronouncing this as Predat-obvre.

Seems like a gimmick. What is the point of a quick detach handguard, if you need a special tool to remove the barrel nut? The LMT MWS .308 seems like a better system.

    Another Suped up AR-15.
    Yayyyyyy.. (Sarc)

    • Practical over Tactical

The fuck do you want from these people? For one thing this is an AR-10 firing 7.62, for another thing it has improvements over similar platforms, and lastly I don’t see you inventing anything. Stop bitching and leave if you’re not interested.

Hey folks lets not get fired up at each other.

      • SiloZen

For one thing, a caliber change is not a innovation, yes it’s an AR-10 in 7.62, but the only difference I can see here is the handguard which is a nice touch, but if the handguard is the only leading point besides the caliber, then it needs a lot more.
The “I don’t see you doing this” argument is invalid.

I do like that the handguard can come off for a barrel change, that’s a good idea.

I just got an email from Larue on my PredatOBR 16 inch order. After 1 yr and 6 days my rifle is finally going into production.

I just ordered a PredatOBR 16 inch this morning and Juli said it would be shipped this afternoon. Lucky me. Sorry you had to wait so long.
