At the Milipol expo last week, an Austrian company Ressenig brought along a Toyota Land Cruiser 200 V8 outfitted with a gun turret and Austrian MG74 machine gun.

The MG74 is the Austrian Armed Forces’ modernized version of the German MG42 and is chambered in 7.62x51mm.

Gee. My police department doesn’t have an MG74, much less one mounted to a Land Cruiser.

    • JamesD

I don’t want my local police to have that type of weapon.

The day my local police buy that would be the same day I leave.

The police forces in my country, Spain used to have MG3s (which, as you probably already know, are pretty much rebarrelled MG42s) mounted in some anti-riot vehicles in the 80′s. Those weren’t the good days.

Question : when does a police force needs a turret mounted mg42 clone?

    • Levi B

When they know they are enforcing unjust laws.

    • Sebastian

Quite prudent in some places over here, what with the imported citizens enjoying such wholesome activities like throwing rocks and molotov cocktails at police cars, fire trucks, ambulances, in fact on any car that doesn’t belong in the area…

      • Cymond

I’m somehow uncomfortable with the idea of responding to hand-thrown rocks with belt-fed fire.

Sorry, I know: Firearms not Politics.

Off the top of my head, the Afgan National Police fighting the Taliban, Mexican Federal Police fighting the drug cartels, Iraqi Police fighting against insurgents….

Well, with the civil unrest growing in Europe, Austria is preparing itself…

This year milipol was filled with electronic surveillance and armored police vehicules.

Man, I’ve so wanted to do this to my own SUV for years now! Rush-hour fantasies…

Too bad the U.S. is so dead set on having the latest and “greatest” and spending umpteen billion dollars on every weapons system instead of just going on the international market and buying something that works. Pretty sure our boys on the ground wouldn’t mind having a few MG74′s.

    • Riceball

You mean weapons like the M240, M249, as well as the AT-4?

  • Jeff

That’s fantastic…NOT. Nothing like aggrevating the masses with a belt feed weapon whilst sitting in an unamoured vehicle. At least it is the V8 model as it will need to be used like a 106mm recoiless ‘rifle’. Shoot then move before the enemy can return fire.

    • Markus

Chances are, that vehicle actually is armoured quite nicely.

If you take a closer look at that companies website, they’re (among other things) specialized in armouring vehicles and the Toyota Land Cruiser 200 series seems to be their platform of choice for “discreetly armoured utility vehicles”. Level FB6/BR6 should withstand standard assault rifles and the floor is supposed to defeat at least two frag grenades.

That said, I guess the MG74 is only for show anyway and has most likely been permanently disabled, considering Austrian laws regarding full-auto guns.

  • hojo

yeah… this is messed up. If your police force needs a vehicle like this, your govt. has become a dirty diaper.

    There are nastier SUVs btw:

I believe you’ll find at least one of the latter escorting the US president’s limo.
