Photos of the MTs-255 Tactical Revolver Shotgun

Russian mil-blogger Vitaly Kuzmin was kind enough to email me photos of the MTs-255 Tactical Revolver Shotgun. I blogged about the MTs-255 last year but was only able to find photos of its hunting counterpart. The Tactical model is really one bad-ass shotgun.

    Hue.
We had a revolving shotgun made by colt, but I think it was around in the 19th century.
Reason it never went into production is because of the possibility that if one round went off creating a spark could ignite all the other rounds in the cylinder.
So some sort of jelly (don’t remember at the moment) was used to cover the rounds from the sparks.

And that kinda made it inefficient.’

Correct me if I’m wrong anywhere.

Definitely ranks high on the cool scale, but rather low on the practical scale. I can’t see any advantages over a pump or auto. But still cool looking…

It’s reliable and able to take low-power ammo like a pump action, but has the rate of fire of a semi-auto. If it weren’t for the crazy high price tag it’d be the perfect shotgun.

And one too a mate after i fit a rifled barrel to one….
FYI pump and Semi auto shotguns are banned in Oz….well anything fun is banned actually……

“It seems like there would be other semiautomatic shotguns with much lighter triggers and perhaps more cartridges (where allowed.) I say semiautomatic because that’s how I believe it would be defined in Canada, which is what I care about heh.”

Actually, Canada has specific laws regarding a revolving long gun. As long as it meets the required length they are perfectly legal, and are not bound by the same capacity restrictions as semiautomatics. That’s a substantial amount of legal leeway.

There needs to be one term for any commercially produced firearm that serves no real sporting/military purpose that’s not done much better by similar designs, yet makes it into a whole bunch of movies.

It’s not a lanyard loop, it’s a sling ring. It’s a folding stock, remember. Many folding stocks for rifles either have a sling loop on the bottom of the grip, or somewhere around the folding latch, so that you can carry them when folded.

It looks cool but is practically dead

No one here in Russia want to buy it, as it is very dangerous in the case of hang-fire, and cannot be easily topped up like a conventional pump or box-fed gun like Saiga

ROFL, I missed the lanyard loop. They really did just go nuts on scaling up the look of a revolver.

SNMP: I’ve never heard of an unprovoked wolf attack on humans. IMO 12 gauge (especially coming from a heavy, unwieldy, uncomfortable POS like that appears to be) isn’t ideal for wolf (give me an AK), and if you’re talking arctic areas where there are polar bear…. I don’t want to try 12 gauge slugs against something that weighs over half a ton. I think I’d prefer something with some more penetration potential and range.

    Hey, this thing looks familiar…
Allow me to take a peek in my library.. Ahh, there we have it, the book of “German firearm designs that never made it” (or better known as “Every epic winrar needs support from piles of epic failures”).

Metalworker August Coenders, together with his brother Johannes, apparently designed a ‘semi-automagic’ revolving shotgun, wich was produced by Mauser and sold by Dewajag as the “Becker revolving shotgun” (yes, the very same Becker from the famous ’20mm Becker’). Records state that less than 100 have been produced during the 1920′s.

Good to see that the Russians still haven’t heard of ergonomics. That thing looks like it’s 9 kinds of uncomfortable, unwieldy and painful.

Was it designed by a mall ninja? Anybody else catch the pistol grip being shaped exactly like a revolver grip? Why? For looks, apparently. Ditto with the folding stock. Having something a bit wider for a cheek weld would be nice, especially with 12 gauge recoil. That crappy wire stock design doesn’t work too well for AKs, it’s going to be even worse with a 12 gauge.

I agree with some of the others. It’s pointless, unless you have some odd postapocalyptic fetish going on. I’ll take a Saiga or Remington for real-world uses, thanks.

I would buy this if the price were compatible with similar 12 ga pump shotguns. (assuming it’s 12 ga.) The looks are definitely bad ass, however I agree with a previous poster that stated that the stock could be improved upon. As an SBS, this thing would totally rock!

I could only see this being useful with a (much) shorter barrel that would take full advantage of the extra capacity. At this length there’s no reason to pick this over a pump-action with a traditional tube magazine other than for the badass-factor.

I also agree that the trigger reach looks looooong. It’s kinda funny to see that after all these years the Russians still don’t put too much thought into ergonomics.

Clear advantages, from the perspective of turning it into an SBS, is that there’s both no gas system, which means the barrel can be whatever length is desired without compromising operation, the stock is already designed to fold (although I think they could do a better job at least aesthetically), and that it still holds five rounds without a long mag tube or stick magazine, both of which increase the size of the overall weapon.

As a full size gun, it kind of made sense in the hunting configuration, but not as this.

    SBS = Short Barrel Shotgun
    SBR = Short Barrel Rifle

    Both need $200 tax stamp.

I’ll buy one if the price is right. It’s all about money at the end of the day.

The problem is the DA trigger. I have a Mossberg 590DA (double action) and boy the trigger suck. It was design so you don’t have to put it on safe. Still it mess with your reaction/speed time. The model (trigger group) has been discontinue.

I saw the trailer to Sucker Punch and it looks neat.

I like my right hand and arm. I just remember reading about revolver rifles during the 19th century(1800s). Some times they would discharge and blow the right hand of the operator off.

Plus that grip looks awfully uncomfortable to fire a powerful 12 gauge shotgun. Right were your thumb would be.

It will probably show up in Hollywood eventually in some post apocalyptic movie. It looks cool but I would not even think about firing it, ever.

If they make one with a solid stock, or one that will accept the use of AR grips and stocks, this would be the only thing that would MAYBE get me to swap out a coach gun for. Now, the question is how long before we see one of these in an anime or movie somewhere.

Heck, what about arming the main character for Sucker Punch with a pair of these sans stocks? >:)

I think the fact that it needs only one hand to operate is a huge advantage in close quarter combat as would be experienced in most self defense situations.

Probably the only advantage over a semi auto shotgun would be cleaning, which I guess would increase reliability.

interesting. def looks like from some fictional world. from a tactical standpoint, how does it hold up vs. say a 500 or 870? reloading? ammo changes? i’m not an expert at shotgun, so i can’t say for sure. why not give it to those guys at magpul for their dynamic shotgun 2 dvd – tactical revolver shotgun!

the previous post by TFB states that it’s SA/DA, and is chambered in 12ga. but that was the hunting version. i’m not sure about the tactical version. the pictures look to show that it’s 12ga (i wouldn’t see why they’d change the size) but i can’t see the hammer, so i’m not sure about sa/da, but i’m guessing they wouldn’t change that either.

For me personally, it would be ‘bad-ass’ if it had a 10+ shell cylinder, but then it would probably be restricted by the BATFE.

Still, it would make a good short barrel shotgun for when you need to carry covertly in a post apocalytic dinosaur populated nuclear wasteland.

I would buy this if the price were compatible with similar 12 ga pump shotguns. (assuming it’s 12 ga.) The looks are definitely bad ass, however I agree with a previous poster that stated that the stock could be improved upon. As an SBS, this thing would totally rock!

Actually, Canada has specific laws regarding a revolving long gun. As long as it meets the required length they are perfectly legal, and are not bound by the same capacity restrictions as semiautomatics. That’s a substantial amount of legal leeway.

It’s not a lanyard loop, it’s a sling ring. It’s a folding stock, remember. Many folding stocks for rifles either have a sling loop on the bottom of the grip, or somewhere around the folding latch, so that you can carry them when folded.

I dunno. There are a few places where this design has advantages. Like any revolver as long as the ammo fits and has enough boom to exit the barrel it will work. Second, is that it could be speadloaded. Be one beast of a speedloader though. I wager the triggle pul. is really heavy though.

interesting. def looks like from some fictional world. from a tactical standpoint, how does it hold up vs. say a 500 or 870? reloading? ammo changes? i’m not an expert at shotgun, so i can’t say for sure. why not give it to those guys at magpul for their dynamic shotgun 2 dvd – tactical revolver shotgun!

the previous post by TFB states that it’s SA/DA, and is chambered in 12ga. but that was the hunting version. i’m not sure about the tactical version. the pictures look to show that it’s 12ga (i wouldn’t see why they’d change the size) but i can’t see the hammer, so i’m not sure about sa/da, but i’m guessing they wouldn’t change that either.

I think the fact that it needs only one hand to operate is a huge advantage in close quarter combat as would be experienced in most self defense situations.

Probably the only advantage over a semi auto shotgun would be cleaning, which I guess would increase reliability.
