Blast from the past

Austin Precision Products, now LaRue Tactical, made 1911 parts back in the 90s. Daniel E Watters says ...

Given some of the features like the EDM wire cut breechface, one suspects that he had been supplying parts for other Texas firms whose initials might include the letters S, T, and I; or C, M, and C. On his industry forum on AR15.com, Mark LaRue has mentioned that he is considering reintroducing the parts.

This handsome fellow is non-other than Tom Dresner. Dresner is notable for being the founder of HKPro.com. Last year he was promoted to Deputy Chief of the Columbia Police Department.

Afghanistan’s first NATO-certified armorers

Later this week the first class of Afghan students will graduate from the NATO basic armorer course. SSgt Rachel Martinez writes ...

The NATO basic armorer course is a six-week course designed to familiarize soldiers and teach them basic maintenance on the variety of NATO weapons they can expect to see and use in the field. The first class of students is scheduled to graduate May 15.

...

Bullard is the main mentor for the NATO basic armorer course. During the course, students are taught armor room operations, with focus on control and accountability of weapons. They also learn about the M-9 pistol, M-16 rifle, M203 grenade launcher, M-249 squad automatic weapon, M-240B machine gun and .50-caliber machine gun. The final week of instruction covers former Warsaw Pact weapons.

“The class prepares them pretty good because they’ve never used NATO weapons before until our class,” Bullard added. “They might have held them and touched them, but they’ve never physically broke them down until they got to our class.”

Lefty Triggers from Timney

It had never occurred to me that southpaw Remington 700 rifles needed different triggers.

For 2010, Timney is offering this same trigger, as well as the model 700 trigger without a safety, for left hand Remington model 700 rifles. Now left handed hunters, target shooters and even tactical marksmen who rely on the Remington 700 can enjoy the benefits of a Timney trigger.

Wildly Guns has “suspended operations”

Wildey Guns, makers of the gas operated Wildly pistol, appear to have gone out of business sometime within the past year. Their phone has a message saying that they have "suspended operations", emails sent to them are bouncing and their last website was lasted update in August of last year.

The Outlaw Josey Wales’ guns

These beautiful Colt Walker revolvers were used in Clint Eastwood's western classic The Outlaw Josey Wales .

I think these guns were featured on the previous episode of NRA News' Curators Corner. Unfortunately I cannot figure out how to watch it! Anyhow, you can read more about these guns at the NRA Blog.

UPDATE: You can watch the episode here (Thanks ThinkingEngine for the instructions) ...

Basic steps to watch the Curator’s Corner. 1. Go to http://www.nramuseum.org/ 2. Click on Curator’s Corner in the bar on the left. 3. Click on the “Clint Eastwood’s Colt Walker at the Tulsa Arms Show” button just to the right.

Winchester’s new 1895 & 1886 rifles

"New" as in newly manufacutred ...

Model 1886 Extra Light Grade I

Model 1895 Grade I

From the press release ...

John M. Browning could be called the greatest gun designer of all time, and two designs he made for Winchester Repeating Arms, the 1895 and 1886 lever action rifles were a couple of his finest. Expanding on past offerings of these two masterpieces, Winchester Repeating Arms is now offering Grade I configurations in both models.

The 1895 Grade I features a deeply blued receiver, lever and barrel. It has a straight buttplate and satin finish walnut stock and forearm. The adjustable buckhorn rear sight and sculpted front blade remind you of guns of past generations. The addition of a tang safety in addition to the standard hammer safety adds a little modern touch to the rifle. The 1895 Grade I is available in 405 Winchester, 30-40 Krag and 30-06. It is a beautiful rifle with a link to the past. Suggested retail price is $1,179.00

The 1886 Extra Light Grade I rifle also features a deeply blued receiver, lever and barrel. In addition, it has a blued steel end cap and straight buttplate. The rifle features a classic half length magazine for the 45-70 cartridges that the rifle is chambered for. The sight on the 1886 is an adjustable rear buckhorn design with a bladed front. The rifle also is designed with a tang safety. Suggested retail price of the 1886 is $1,269.00

Both the 1895 and 1886 are being made in very limited quantities. Interested gun owners should contact their local Winchester Repeating Arms dealer immediately if they are interested in buying one.

Barrett REC7 now in 5.56mm

Barrett's REC7 piston-operated AR-15 rifle was previously only available in 6.8mm SPC. It is now also available in 5.56mm NATO. They have also made some minor improvement to the rifle. They are now using a Magpul MOE stock, instead of a standard M4-style stock, and a Daniel Defense free-float rail system.

Vintage Ordnance FP-45 Liberator Pistol

Vintage Ordnance are producing clones of the FP-45 Liberator pistol for just $599.50 + S&H.

I have long since wondered why nobody was producing replicas. Reading their website I now know why ...

Though our reproduction is sold as a firearm and exceeds the mechanical strength of the original through the use of superior materials and vastly tighter chamber and headspace tolerances, WE STRONGLY ADVISE CUSTOMERS NOT TO FIRE THE PISTOL. During production in 1942, several examples were taken from the assembly line to test under repetitive fire. Reports indicated that after 50 rounds of service ball ammunition the testers felt the weapons were no longer safe to fire. They were simply never designed handle a steady diet of powerful .45 ACP. They were made to fire ten rounds. They are what they are.

That defiantly puts me off buying one.
