Embarrassing mistakes I made at SHOT

You all may as well get a laugh out of the top three stupid things I did at SHOT Show ...

  • At Media Day I was having a great time shooting offhand with a Ruger No. 1 chambered in .300 H&H Magnum. A poor cheek weld on one of the shots left me with a bruised jaw for the rest of the week. I know better than to shoot with a poor cheek weld.

  • I was playing with the knives and on of the booth and cut my finger on an incredibly sharp blade. It would not be particually embaressing, but it would not stop bleeding (Murdoc can attest to that) and so many observant attendees and exhibiters asked me, with a smirk on their face, which knife booths I had been visiting icon wink Embarrassing mistakes I made at SHOT photo If you play with knives you are gonna get cut.

  • At GemTech's booth I removed the dust cover on an ATI Kalashnikov. I had not yet been to the ATI booth and wanted to see what was going on under it. Problem was that I could not figure out how to put it back on ... which really pissed off a GemTech staff member.

H&K MP7

Posted because everybody love the MP7. My first impression was that it is much bigger in real life than in photos. While it is a sexy gun, the .17 cal (4.6x30mm) cartridge does not inspire me with confidence.

Benelli Legacy 28 is “World’s Lightest Shotgun”

The much hyped "World’s Lightest Shotgun" was unveiled at SHOT Show. It is a Benelli Legacy scaled down to the 28 gauge cartridge and named the Legacy 28. The low weight has been achieved mainly because of the scaled-down action but also by the use of a low capacity magazine (2+1 compared with the Legacy standard 4+1) and use of a carbon fiber rib.

Chuck Hawks has the skinny on the 28 gauge ...

The 28 gauge is the little shell that could. It can dominate small bore skeet, it's effective on upland birds, and it makes a light yet low recoiling gun for beginner or expert alike. All it lacks is the public acceptance that would bring with it a larger assortment of guns and ammunition at reasonable prices, and that may be coming.

To the music industry: The XM8 is no longer cool.

Rihanna's music video for the song Hard features lot of guns. Plenty of M4's (being fired in a very careless manner) and XM-8s can be seen. Seems that while Hollywood has figured out that the XM8 is no longer cool, the music industry has not.

At least the dude has good trigger control.

The rifle will be offered in four configurations:

  • Tactical Patrol (12.5" barrel, almost certainly only on offer to law enforcement and military)
  • Patrol (16" barrel)
  • Precision Marksman (16" barrel)
  • Precision Sniper (20" barrel)

Every model is equipped with free-floating quad rail and chrome-lined barrels. The Marksmen models feature heavy match barrels. The non-marksmen models come with backup iron sights. The 517 makes use of Armalite's AR-10 Gen II magazine.

Glock 22 KABOOM

This Glock 22 (.40 S&W) blew up while firing reloaded ammunition.

From AR15.com ...

Was at the range with some friends today, and a friends glock 22 grenaded with some commercially reloaded .40. This brand is really popular up here for idpa and ipsc as well as plinking.

The trigger, mag release, and slide stop disintigrated, but were recovered amongst the rubble around the range. The head of the case was found about 20 yards downrange. Also, the top of the chamber took a chunk out of the ceiling. not to mention the slide coming off of the rail on one side, and the frame being completely warped in that area.

his hand is alright, no cuts, but will probably be bruised soon.

VLTOR sues Magpul

Abrams Airborne Manufacturing, VLTOR's parent company, is the third company in recent months to sue Magpul over patent infringement. VLTOR claim that Magpul's ACS stock violates their Modular Firearm Buttstock patent.

Both stocks feature a removable storage compartment. It looks like VLTOR may have a legitimate case.

M4 Carbine torture test

The NYTimes.com has published two videos recorded by Colt Defense. They compare the M4 and the M4A1.

m4a1 tfb M4 Carbine torture test photo
M4A1 still going after 911 rounds (although gas tube melts preventing semi or full auto fire)

The NYTimes reports ...

That video shows the same test with an M-4 equipped with a thicker, heavier barrel, which is used on a specialized carbine, known as the M-4A1. This variant is carried by some Special Operations users.

...

Colt Defense and the Army have been discussing making the change to a heavier barrel for several months and appear likely to begin requiring standard-issue rifles to have the barrel previously manufactured for the M-4A1.

Sounds like Colt is going on the PR offensive.

[ Many thanks to all the readers who emailed in these videos. ]
