Hi. I have been a collector and do repair work on antique pistols for over
40 years and I would suggest that the screw on the butt of the pistol is
for attaching a watch chain and fob.
This would give the person that owned it a very big advantage in that he
could bring the pistol to bare on adversary before he could react. Thinking
the victim was getting his watch out.

Greetings from Texas,
Thanks for posting this. I had the muzzel loading Philadelphia Derringer (Kit) but have never heard of one of these before. It's the unusual like these that makes studying the history of firearms such a joy.

Based upon what I have seen with other types of early cartridge arms that included a provision for using percussion cap and ball as an alternative to rimfire cartridges, it seems likely that the threaded and slotted plug in the butt was intended to allow access to a storage well bored into the butt end of the grip, which would hold and store the percussion adapter/insert when it was not in use.

I know nothing about these kind of guns but maybe the threaded butt is for adding a carbine stock?

What an incredibly beautiful pistol. The engraving and ace of hearts is amazing.
