Incredible slow motion bullet video

This video is a must watch. It is hands down the best slow motion video I have ever seem!

It demonstrates ...

  • Frangible bullets on different angled surfaces
  • What happens when bullets collide with flying objects
  • Air gun pellets
  • Shotgun pellets
  • Bullets that hit the corner of a hard object
  • ... and more.

Frangible bullets do live up to their claim of not ricocheting. I was impressed that the bullets did not ricochet from the low angled surfaces.

The video was shot by Kurzzeit, a company that sells a high speed video camera that can capture one million frames per second!

A big thanks to Jay for emailing me the video!

MG Industries have developed an interesting quick change barrel / takedown upper receiver for the AR-15.

Tam has got her hands on one of them and has an interesting discussion going on about it on her blog.

Czech Army may be dumping the Vz. 58

From what I can make out, it appears that the Czech Army may be planning to replace their well known Vz. 58 assault rifles.

All the articles I have read were very badly written and incredibly confusing. The Czech news website Ceskenoviny.cz , for example, seems to be confused by the different between a pistol and a rifle.

The new arms will replace machine guns 58 based on the Soviet-made Kalashnikovs AK 47, Pravo writes.

...

"It was originally said that only special units will get offensive handguns. The whole military could be rearmed for two billion crowns," Seda told Pravo.

It writes that the military also plans to spend 3.49 billion crowns on the purchase of light armoured vehicles. Next year 418 million crowns are to be spent on the purchase and a greater part in 2013 and 2014.

Earlier this year I covered the launch of the CZ S805 rifle, which was developed in conjunction with the Czech Army. I guess that this will be the replacement.

Breaking News: Izhmash is not insolvent and operations will continue as normal

This is great news for Saiga rifle and shotgun fans the world over can sleep easy tonight. Backyard Safari reports (Translated in Google, emphasis mine):

The fact is this: on 21.09.2009 has been reported that a company declare named Gremikha LLC "at the Economic and Trade Arbitration matters relevant indicative of the Republic had requested Udmurtia, the" Izhmash AG "for insolvent. More backgrounds were, and are not known. Maybe Gremikha is or was a creditor of Izhmash who wanted to recover in this way its accounts receivable. As the court date was 07.10. scheduled and thus took place yesterday, the court dealt with the case. Result: The application is not accepted. Izhmash is not insolvent and can thus continue its business operations as normal. Good news!

I was very worried about the outcome of the court case and am relived the supply of Saiga's and Tigr's will not run out anytime soon.

Gunsite Carbine Training Review

Caleb, of Gun Nuts Media, just completed a Carbine course at the Gunsite training facility.

I took a couple of minutes to think about it, and decided that the best way to summarize the class would be as such: Gunsite doesn’t teach you to shoot – they teach you to think. That’s an important distinction, because shooting is a mechanical skill, whereas thinking like a fighter is all mental. I have to give credit to Ed Head and the training staff at the range – the collection of writers and industry people represented a wildly diverse set of skills, backgrounds, and shooting talents.

Read his review of the course here.

The 9x19mm NP (Netherlands Police)

This year the Dutch Police have been trailing new pistols which will replace their current service pistol, the Walther P5.

A new cartridge, called the 9x19mm NP (Netherlands Police), has been developed for their future service weapon. The 9mm NP features a 94 grain (6.1 gram) solid copper hollow point bullet with a plastic cap inserted into the hollow.

Ballistically it is the same as 9mm Luger / Parabellum. It is given a separate designation because some firearms, such as the MP5, will need to be modified to function correctly with the lighter bullet.

Many thanks to my source for this information.

UPDATE: The photos have been removed as they did not belong to "Marco" as previously reported, but to members of Nederlandse Vereniging ter Bestudering van Munitie en Ballistiek. They retain full and exclusive rights to the photos.
