I don’t ask because I think they actually know or care about the filter, but if I’m inconvenienced, I want my internet access for free. I want the clerk to tell me it’s not a problem so that if it is, I can bust his balls about it.

Most hotels do not run their own internet–especially hotels that charge a fee for internet access.

Most front desk clerks are, well, let’s just say that most of them are NOT working in the hotel to pass the time until their check from the Nobel folks for their contribution to physics comes in.

Your average front desk clerk, night auditor or manager doesn’t set the filtering policy, doesn’t understand the term “filtering policy”, and wouldnt’ be able to set or adjust the filters if they could.

If you use Mozilla Fire Fox there is an add-on called Foxy Proxy that I have had good results with in circumventing filters like this.

Just a thought, might have more to do with paranoid airport security (it said airport hotel) than the chain itself.

Whenever I stay at a hotel, I ask about internet access (at least I did until my laptop died) and I always ask very specific questions like: “If I look on firearms oriented websites, will I be blocked by some damn commie filter?” They always look befuddled, and say something like “No, I don’t think so, sir.” Then I record the name of the person who told me that and if I’m blocked, I call the desk and raise bloody hell. “SUCH AND SUCH TOLD ME I WOULDN’T BE BLOCKED! I’M NOT PAYING FOR THIS INTERNET CONNECTION! I WANT TO SPEAK TO YOUR MANAGER!”

I learned this behavior from my mother. Thanks mom.

Basically, if they charge for internet access, and most of them do, I get it for free if they attempt to block me. I’m not hacking into the FBI’s database, I’m just looking at S&W’s new products. If they don’t charge, it’s still fun to complain.

There are tools like Tor and Hotspot Shield that supposedly will let you gain access to any blocked site by masking what and where it is. I do not use them, but it has been suggested . . .
