Why have Ruger not introduced a tactical 10/22 rifle?

Ruger finally went tactical for the first time in decades with the launch of the Mini-14 Tactical. So why did the 10/22, probably their biggest selling firearm and quite possibly the worlds biggest selling rimfire rifle, not get the tactical treatment? It makes no sense.

KNOXX Axiom R/F Ruger 10/22 stock

KNOXX (Owned by Blackhawk) have introduced a tactical style stock for the Ruger 10/22 rifle called the Axiom R/F. My guess is that the R/F stands for RimFire.

As you can see in the photo, the stock features a 6-position M4 style adjustable stock, pistol grip and free floating barrel channel. The MSRP is $99.99

I think this is going to be a *very* popular product. I think the price is good and it has been build for accuracy. Rimfire rifle tactical stocks tend to be build for looks not function.

PMAGs not holding up

UPDATE: Drake from Magpul emailed me to say this was an issue with just one batch and it has been resolved.

This was a very small batch of PMAG’s that had this issue. We addressed the issues internally and solved the problem. We also followed up with all of our customers that we thought may have received these issue mags. Problem solved.

There is a discussion at the M4Carbine.net forum about Magpul polymer PMAGs cracking. Steve from Triad Tactical was running a training program and noticed a bunch of the PMAGs cracking in the same spot.

brokenp mags tm PMAGs not holding up photo

By the end of the first class, 50% of the pmags were broken. All of them had split where the feed lips meet to form a V on the spine. I called Magpul and they over nighted me 50 new pmags and a prepaid return label for all 50 of the ones I had, broken or not. They asked me a bunch of questions about the who, what, when, where and how the mags had been used. This was very cool and I was pleased with the way it was handled. I was back on track and had one course of 26 in the books, 25 to go.

More here.

The moral of the story is that diversity is the key. Don’t rely on one brand of magazine, especially if you are buying a whole lot at once. If a batch is faulty, regardless of wether it is metal or polymer, and you bought a whole lot you are screwed.

Many thank to Jay for the link.

Pirates free weapons ship after receiving ransom

The Ukrainian ship captured last year that was carrying tanks, RPGs and other small arms has been abandoned by the pirates after they received a $3.2 million ransom. Kenya Broadcasting Corporation reports:

Pirates had initially demanded a ransom of $20m, but reports suggest that a figure of $3.2m (£2.2m) was agreed.

The US navy said that a ransom appeared to have been dispatched on Wednesday and Mikhail Voitenko, said to be a spokesman for ship owner Vadim Alperin, later said that the pirates were “counting the haul”.

Early on Thursday groups of pirates began leaving the vessel, reports from Haradhere said. Representatives of the pirates then told journalists that the ship had been freed.

I wonder how much of its cargo has already made it into the hands of rebels and insurgents across the continent. The real tragedy is that the criminals now know that despite a naval presence in the area representing just about all the worlds navel powers, ransoms will be paid. Great precedent.

Indian gun runners stealing arms from state arms factory

Gun smugglers in India have been stealing arms and ammunition under the nose of the the Ministry of Defense. With insider help they have been stole weapons and ammunition from the state arms factory Indian Ordnance Factories (IOF).

Times of India reports (emphasis mine):

Apart from 25 guns, including five rifles, police found over 6,000 rounds of ammunition, three pen pistols and eight fake gun licenses. It was the arrest of Ashok Mondal and five of his aides that led police to a trader’s house and one of the biggest arms haul in the country.

Investigators have found that the gang used fake gun licenses to procure sophisticated weapons from the factories. “Without help of some ordnance factory employees, it is impossible to smuggle out arms and ammunition,” said an investigator. CID officers seized more than 6000 bullets of different calibres manufactured by ordnance factories, including bullets used in AK assault rifles.

In a country where firearms are heavily restricted and, I believe, imports are rare or non-existant I would have thought this kind of this would not happen.

Para Ordnance Tactical Target Rifle internals

Olav @ Firearms and Training has taken photos of the internals of his Z-M Weapons LR300 (now manufactured by Para Ordnance as the Tactical Target Rifle) and explained how it works.

Bolt Carrier Group

This shows a close up of the bolt carrier group. The gas key is staked. Notice the extra vents for gas to escape from, his allows the gun to run cooler since a lot of the gas and crud vents out of the gun. Also notice it’s missing the portion of the bolt carrier that sits against the buffer which saves on weight. This also means less recoiling mass.

Read the article here. I highly recommend it.

Bolt action AR-15

Ryo decided his Remington 700 did not cut it, so he built a bolt action AR-15. Basically it is a AR-15 with a side charging handle and a blocked gas port.

img 4545 tm1 Bolt action AR 15 photo

Instead, I bought a 26″ Krieger AR-15 Varmatch barrel, with a 1:7.75 twist. They had these in stock, so it showed up at my apartment in about 2 weeks. To block the gas port, I simply installed the gas block off-centered (then later rotated it upside down because I was getting stung by gas and ejecta which managed to leak through the gas block and out the rear-facing hole where the gas tube would normally be).

A great looking rifle and I am sure it functions well and the bolt can probably be worked faster than many straight pull bolt actions.

Revision Eyewear Sawfly Tactical Eyewear

Revision Eyewear have developed an impressive protective eyewear lens designed for combat. This video shows the Sawfly being shot by a 12 gauge Remington 1187 shotgun firing #6 lead shot from 16 feet:

It is hit 37 times (what they say, I did not count) by the 0.11 caliber lead shot traveling at over 1300 fps. Very impressive!

I don’t shoot birds and so I do not use steel shot, just lead for plinking, but I think high end ballistics glasses like these should be used when shooting steel shot. Unlike lead, steel is hard and can bounce. Last year a friend of my brother lost one of his eyes when he was out duck shooting with his father. The guys father negligently discharged his shotgun into the ground and one of the steel shot bounced back and hit the son.

The Revision Eyewear Sawfly costs between $89 and $169.

CZ-USA promoting Skorpion Pistol as-featured-in-popular-video-games

CZ-USA is once again importing the Skorpion pistol. What I found really interesting is that the press releases mentions that the gun is features in video games. I have not seen this before. I think most companies want to distance themselves from violent video games.

From the press release (emphasis mine):

Although it was developed for use with security forces, the Skorpion was adopted by the Czechoslovakian Army in 1961 as a sidearm for vehicle drivers, armored vehicle personnel and special forces. In addition to being featured in many of today’s popular video games, the VZ 61 Skorpion is currently in service with numerous military units, and police agencies around the globe.

gb 122048000 122048970 pix819272718 tm CZ USA promoting Skorpion Pistol as featured in popular video games photo

The pistol comes with all the accessories you will ever need: 1×10 round mag, 2×20 round mags, cleaning kit, pouch, and an instruction manual on a CD. The MSRP will be $814.
Specs:

Caliber .32 ACP
Overall length 10.4”
Barrel length 4.52”
Height 6.5”
Width 1.68”
Weight 2.58lbs

The difference between this and the “real” Skorpion is that this lacks full auto (obviously) and the wire stock.
