I looks like a real improvement over the archaic standard K2 handguard.

ATF statistics for 2007 published

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives have published Annual Firearms Manufacturers And Export Report 2007 (warning: PDF Link).

It gives some interesting insight into firearms sales:

picture 9 24 ATF statistics for 2007 published photo
Pistols Manufactured in 2007

picture 10 19 ATF statistics for 2007 published photo
Revolvers Manufactured in 2007

picture 7 21 ATF statistics for 2007 published photo
Rifles, Shotguns and Misc firearms Manufactured in 2007

picture 8 26 ATF statistics for 2007 published photo
Exports in 2007

Interesting facts:
5.01% of rifles manufactured were exported in 2007.

3.7% of pistols were exported

8.7% of revolvers were exported.
32% of pistols are 9mm (presumably 9mm Luger/Parabellum ).

All 9mm calibers (including .380) came to 43% of all pistol manufactured.

23% of revolvers are .22 or below in caliber. Likely to be mostly rimfire.

Because the BATFE do not breakdown the distribution between calibers 9mm and .50 we cannot compare .40 S&W and .45 ACP to 9mm Luger.

Thanks to Jay for letting me know the report was published online.

Video of man defending home against men armed with AR-15

This is a pretty amazing video. Four men, one armed with an AR-15, attempt a daylight robbery in Tucson. In no time they are quickly running for their lives as the homeowner defends his home with a gun firing two or three shots into the drivers side of the getaway car’s windscreen.

LiveLeak reports:

The robbery happened in broad dayligh More..t at a home on West Vande Loo Street. All the action was caught by the homeowners outdoor surveillance system.

The victim was able to get back inside his house, close his door, semi barricade it, reach for a weapon that was easily accessible.

The homeowner shot at the suspects.
He even put a bullet through the windshield of the suspects car, which is also caught on camera.

No doubt that guy had at least some training. There is a discussion about this at ar15.com

Reader of the blog, Jay, reckons this may be related to the crime that has crossed the border. Phoenix, two hours drive further away from the Mexican border, is now the #2 city in world for kidnappings!

Big thanks to Jay for the links.

TROY Mini 14 MCS Stock

Later this year TROY will be selling a Modular Chassis Systems for the Mini 14. The orginal TROY Modular Chassis Systems is an excellent, albeit expensive, stock for the M14 / M1A. It makes perfect sense to scale it down for the Mini 14 which was a very similar external appearance to the M14, which it was modeled on.

Mossberg 100ATR Night Train II

Mossberg have announced a new rifle for 2009 called the 100ATR Night Train II. Oddly enough Mossberg did not include this rifle in their 2009 catalog.

1014233 Mossberg 100ATR Night Train II photo

The rifle is a significant upgrade over the original Night Train. It features everything you can see in the above photo: a harris bipod, Barska 6-24 x 60mm variable scope, muzzle brake, neoprene comb raising kit with foam cheek pad inserts. It is a complete system.

It also features a free floating button rifled barrel and the new Mossberg LBA trigger to achieve good accuracy.

Specs:

Caliber: .308 Win.
Stock: Synthetic black or camo
Magazine capacity: 4+1
Barrel: 22″
Weight: 9.6 lbs

UPDATE: Kim @ Mossberg PR told me that the MSRP is $949 for the camo and $913 for the black. No bad at all considering that you get for that.

IBM files Matrix style bullet dodging patent

I absolutely loved the scenes in the Matrix where Neo dodges bullets. Last week IBM was issued a patent that in theory would give us mortals that ability.

wp content uploads 2008 11 neo IBM files Matrix style bullet dodging patent photo

The patent proposes a system where an external device monitors the area for incoming projectiles. If it detects a projectile headed near a person hooked into the system it can either shock their muscles in order to move their body a particular way to dodge the bullet, Neo style, or it could simply make the intended target collapse.

picture 11 23 tm IBM files Matrix style bullet dodging patent photo
Figure from the patent.

From the patent:

The present invention relates generally to the protection of an individual against a projectile propelled from a firearm. More particularly, the present invention relates to a body armor system and its method of use that is capable of detecting a projectile propelled from a firearm, computing the trajectory of the projectile, and moving the individual out of the path of the projectile to avoid being hit.

Historically, certain individuals have been exposed to the threat of assassination because of their status in society. Examples of these individuals include, but are not limited to, high ranking politicians, clerics, successful industrial entrepreneurs, and military personnel. These individuals tend to be most vulnerable during those times when they are publicly addressing large crowds, making them easy targets for snipers.

In the past, the only effective protection against “sniper fire” has been to wear bullet proof body armor…. Furthermore using armor-piercing ammunition renders body-armors even less effective and desirable.

picture 12 20 tm IBM files Matrix style bullet dodging patent photo
Obama surrounded by ballistic glass at the Inauguration.

At an event the size and important as a presidential Inauguration where the high ranking target can be protected this system is not really useful, but I can see how it could in situations where this kind of protection is just not possible.

Read the full patent here. UPDATE: IBM withdrew the patent. You can read a copy I made of it here.

A big thanks to Daniel Watters for the info.

Finn invents electric drill powered machine gun

An 80 year old Finnish man invented this .22 LR belt fed machine gun. It could be fake but looks legit and is plausible. Jani confirms it is real in the comments below.

The approximate translation of the caption:

80-year-old hameenlinnalaisininoori developed drilling machine, the machine became a weapon, which became a speed of 420 shots per minute. suitable balance 22 caliber cartridges.

420 rounds per minute! Not bad considering it is powdered by a drill. For comparison a blowback MAC-10 machine pistol fires 9mm around at about 1,090 round/minute. It may use the blow back to reset itself after each round

A big thanks to reader illspirit for the link.
