I have wondered about this myself. Basically a spud gun that shoots actual bullets. Take the concept of an internal combustion piston engine, but instead of a reciprocating piston there is a bullet that is propelled out the end of the cylinder. Now there are significant engineering problems to overcome here, not the least of which is how to auto-reload the thing, and how to keep the bullet from sliding out the end before it is intended to fire; but these problems shouldn't be too hard to overcome in a practical manner. I would think that the propulsive energy from normal gasoline, diesel, kerosene or some other similar fuel should be sufficient to get the bullet up to normal firearm speeds. Basically I am describing a "gun" with a gas tank, a bullet hopper, and a spark plug.
