Skorpion photos

Photos of the Skorpion submachine gun were posted at MP.net. I thought I would post some of them here.

It is interesting to see the short 10 round magazine being used in the field. I had always assumed they were only used by police when using the Skorpion as a “pistol”. 10 rounds of .32 ACP or 9mm does not seem like much these days when ultra compact .32 ACP pistols like the Kel-Tec P-32 hold 7+1.

GSG-5P: .22 MP5 patterned pistol

American Tactical Imports are importing the GSG-5P, a pistol version of the .22 MP5 patterned GSG-5.

The specs are the same as the carbine/rifle version apart from weighing 400 grams less. As far as I can see it is a GSG-5 with a butt plate instead of a stock.

The first thing I thought when looking at it was “wouldn’t that be cool in an MP5K configuration”, but bear in mind that adding a forward grip will make it an AOW.

Ruger SR9 version 1.1 (post recall edition)

Andrew emailed me photos of his SR9 that he has just got back from Ruger. You can see external changes made.

He got a free cap and two magazines, which is not much considering they had his pistol for 97 days!

I have to say 3 months was making me disaponited that i didn’t wait for the new redesigned xd, but I have to say i took out the redesigned sr9 and the trigger pull is improved and it shots like a dream, also mag release is sweet. first 200 no misfires and great hold on target as always . Next step is to get xs 24/7 to make sights for us

Thanks Andrew for your time.

Variable velocity firearms

New Scientist has reported on a company that is developing a “Variable Velocity Weapon System” that works by

mixing a liquid or gaseous fuel with air in a combustion chamber behind the bullet. This determines the explosive capability of the propellant and consequently the velocity of the bullet as it leaves the gun. “Projectile velocity varies from non-lethal at 10 metres, to lethal at 100 metres or more, as desired,” says Lund.

The concept of a variable amount of gas is not new, pump air guns have had this feature for a long time but, at least according to the article, the gas is ignited making it a true firearm.

Interesting concept. Although I wonder about how useful it is compared to existing systems: a non lethal gun and a lethal side arm.

Another company filed a patent in 1997 for a “Variable Velocity Weapon System”. The system they describe ports gas from behind the projectile to in front of it creating pressure and slowing it down. Sounds like a great idea to create huge amounts of pressure and blowing up the barrel.

From the patent:

The present invention relates to weapon systems that accelerate projectiles using gases generated by the rapid combustion of a solid propellant, in particular, such a weapon system is able to vary the barrel exiting velocity of the projectile through a barrel venting means. In one embodiment, a front venting means exhausts gas generated by combusting propellant from behind the accelerating projectile and redirects a portion of the exhausted gas either to at least one fixed volume, to the front of the projectile, or to a combination of at least one fixed volume and to the front of the projectile. Redirecting some of the exhausted gas to the front of the projectile restrains the projectile, thereby slowing the projectile, and thus further decreasing the muzzle velocity of the projectile. In another embodiment, gas from behind the projectile is exhausted into a fixed volume, thereby decreasing projectile acceleration, and thus, the muzzle velocity of the projectile.

S&W “Heller” Model 442

S&W have partnered with the Second Amendment Foundation to produce a S&W “Heller” Model 442 revolver

The Smith & Wesson Model 442 will be laser engraved with an insignia to commemorate the ruling by the Supreme Court. On the right side plate of the revolver, the scale of justice is depicted with the wording “D.C. vs. Heller” across the scale. The balance is in favor of the “Heller” name with the court date of “June 26, 2008″ positioned across the top. Underneath the scale, the side plate reads “Second Amendment” and “The right to keep and bear arms” in white lettering.

Chinese reporters shot at police anti-gun briefing

This is hilarious, you just can’t make this stuff up (not of course for the poor guy who was shot). The BBC reports:

Three Chinese reporters attending a police briefing on the success of an anti-gun campaign were accidentally shot, media reports say.

An officer picked up one of the weapons on show - a confiscated home-made gun - but it went off in his hand.

A reporter needed surgery for injuries to his ankle, crotch and chest, after being hit by what appeared to be pebbles fired by the gun.

It was a homemade shotgun designed for birds. UPDATE: Actually it was a homemade double barreled pistol shotgun!

I think if anyone needs guns confiscated it is the Chinese police. Stay clear of them if you are attending the Olympics ;)

The classic policeman-discharging-his-pistol-in-a-classroom video shows incredible lack of safety but it is even more unbelievable that nobody checked to ensure the gun was unloaded between confiscating it, processing it, storing it and then displaying it to the media.

More here.

UPDATE: I found a photo of the gun at china.org.cn
