I can put 2" groups consistantly in the bullseye at 100 yards with the Ruger mini-14 with the optical.

The 308 is a sniper rifle. So, it is easier to target shoot.

Mac is right. The Mini-14 is not a target rifle. I you want a target rifle go buy a bolt action in .308.

I picked up the new mini-14 tactical with the flash suppressor for 765 bucks. I am very pleased to say that it does what it was made to, with ease. No problem with 2" groups at 100yds. It's a rugged gun, very light, comfortable, and the ATI callapsable stock gives it versatility.

I have shot AR's, M-15's, and various sniper models. I have to say it was a great purchase. I slapped a Bushmills optical with daylight red lowlight green and it's a great match-up. I love the fact that the bushmills lets you get the gun up and shoot quick.

The only negative thing I noticed was the trigger is a little stiff out of the box. It may be the sniper rifles have me spoiled.

I carried a minie 14 at work for 2 years, qulaified with it at least 8 times to include the 100 and 75 yd. line on a Q target. Gun never missed a beat . Its like an old truck, runs and does what you asked of it. I now carry a bushmaster, another great gun. When the stuff hits the fan either will get you through the nite. I have owned several ar type rifles and 2 minies in the past 20 years, never had a major problem with any. The minie never missed a beat, the ar types are more accurate but jamb on a rare occasin.

Why all of the beating-up on the Mini-14? The Mini-14 is what it is; a compact, affordable, general use carbine. It is not a long range varmint rifle. It is not a target rifle. It is not military assault weapon. At $750 bucks, new, it is slightly more than 1/2 as expensive as most "assault" rifles on the market at the moment. I have owned, and shot, one for the last thirty years. It functions flawlessly. I can shoot 3" groups off hand at 100 meters consistently. With the 3-9x scope in place, I can place five shots into a coffee can at 300 meters from a rest. It has fed everything that I have ever put in the mag and never failed to fire when I squeezed the trigger.

Are there sturdier weapons out there? Yes. Are there more accurate weapons out there? Yes. Is there a better value for your dollar out there? Probably not.

Why people want to dump on the Mini-14 is beyond me. I believe it has a better operating system than an AR type rifle and accuracy is plenty good for close combat or self defense distances. They are handy well made guns, that you don't have to baby.

Screw Ruger. A Ruger Mini-14 or 30 is not the answer. If you want a dependable weapons system don't look through the Ruger catalog. The mini's have deplorable accuracy. Get something like an AR and you will find cheaper, more reliable mags like the P-MAG.

I have had the same positive experience with the new NRA M-14. Improvements and the 20 round mags made all the difference. Lack of accuracy is no longer an issue. Accuracy did not change with good factory ammo or my hot reloads. With a scope, cold or hot barrel, it shot tight groups at 100 yards and never any malfunctions. Experienced AR owners that shot the M-14 were very impressed.

I bought a new NRA mini-14 and I love it. It shoots and handles well, and is easily minute-of-coffee-can at 100 yds. The heavier, shorter barrel is nice, and the Hogue stock is comfy. Regarding High-Caps: if you know how to shop, there have always been reliable 10/22 and Mini-14 mags around, though these 2 factory 20-rounders are awesome. I've had lots of very good 30/40/50-round 10/22 mags that never missed a beat.

Ruger played a political game while Democrat idiots passed stupid laws at the behest of stupid democrap voters. They never stopped producing reliable firearms with big after-markets.

My likely targets are two-legged varmints at 50 yds, and I'm very happy with my mini.

well I remember shooting my Mini 14 in Australia (before they were banned) ... and on one notable occaision and with a 20 shot mag... I hit a wild pig (hog) with my first shot then proceeded to dump the following 19 rounds into the countryside....spectacular but just throwing lead..!!!!!....whilst I liked semis as´fun´ guns....really...... my friends with lever and bolt action rifles always seemed to down more game...
I eventually switched too.... and my ´batting average´ improved dramatically !!!!!

there have been many semi/full automatic military firearms that take a rimmed cartridge such as the Bren (.303) and Dragunov (7.62x54R). It certainly is harder to engineer but Ruger has much greater resources than the small companies currently producing high cap mags.

I think they are biding their time with the special edition mini-14, I would be surprised, but pleased, to see a Ruger mini-14 high cap magazine individually this year. They will be seeing how the elections go.... Well, thats it my opinion, for what its worth.

I dunno. Are there any mags for the 10-22 that hold more than ten rounds and actually work?

The .22 LR cartridge is a rimmed cartridge originally designed for revolvers. Making it work in a semiauto with a detachable box magazine requires a great deal more engineering than is widely known. I remember there have always been a lot of cheap plastic aftermarket high-capacity mags for the 10-22. Most of them don't work for sour apples. Even some Ruger factory mags don't work out of the box.

But that's secondary. If Ruger is now selling the 20-round Mini mags to us peasants, how long will it be before they're selling the mags separately, and the prices come down from the $50 mark?

I hope this causes no end of un-ease to the rotting corpse of bill Ruger.

Then again, if I wanted a rifle in .223 I would buy anything other than an 8 MOA on a good day (sarcastic hyperbole) Mini-14 regardless of its A-Team pedigree.

Good point, Ruger must lose a lot of potential profit, not selling higher capacity 10/22 magazines. They are a public company and are answerable to their shareholder and if they sell high cap mini-14 and pistol magazines why not other rifles?
