hello eric,

do you have specific reasons for not removing the mag disconnect? the gun fires much more smoothly without it, and i can practice dry firing with the mdc removed.

in an emergency situation, if the magazine fell out, i would want the gun to fire with a round in the chamber.

thanks for posting that link. it's the same video i posted on 11/11. it's not a complete disassembly.

i'm actually looking for a video of a full disassembly of the gun. the rugerforum step by step explanation is helpful with pictures, but there are somethings best shown by video.

happy thanksgiving, everyone!

Hi Pastor Ted,

Here's a video of how to completely disassemble a SR9 to remove the magazine disconnect. I would strongly advise NOT TO DO THAT.. But the video still shows how to take the gun apart.

Hope that helps.

hello sr9 friends,

went to the range yesterday, shot 100 rds. the trigger is slightly less heavy.

does anyone know of a youtube video that shows a deep strip of the sr9? specifically i'd like to clean the trigger, the way wendell described.

the step by step picture one on rugerforums is hard to follow.

thanks!

hi wendell,

once i receive my kahr pm9, i'll bring my kids to the range. i hear that the trigger is butter smooth, and the recoil is comparable, even less than a .380 lcp.

i think my 13 yr. old can handle it, not sure about the younger two. i'm glad my wife approves of this, and is even willing to join me taking a ccw course for utah and florida. too bad california is a may issue, not shall issue, state.

My 14 yr old has shot 9mms, 380's, .22's, 20 gages, bb's guns and a AR 15 which she loved! She's a pretty good shot. My 12 yr old has shot but not as much but more than my wife. She has shot enough to be comfortable with the guns in case she needed to use them, which I hope she never has to. I guess because my kids have been around guns most all their lives and have been taught safety, I have never had to be real worried about them messing with my guns, which by the way they are not just lying around. It takes the wonder out of it I guess.

Oh yes I have had my G19 for a couple of months now which I carry most all the time if not my LCP, but no I haven't shot it yet. Range time is coming soon with winter coming on.

hi wendell,

i've been teaching my kids (oldest 13 yrs) about gun safety, and they've been to the range to watch. maybe i should let my oldest shoot too. :)

http://www.bvac-ammo.com. if you are military or leo, it turns out to be $388 per 1k. just make sure that the day you order, you send in a cashier's or bank check right away. otherwise you'll need to order by cc and get charged another $11.

Ted and Eric,

I wish my wife would shot some. My 14 yr old girl loves to and would shoot up my supply of ammo if I would let her. As for the trigger, mine was gritty until I totally broke it down and got the grease and metal filings out of it. Much smoother now.

I would contact Ruger also, just may get yourself a cap or something out of it for your troubles.

Oh Pastor Ted, where did you get the .19 cent ammo at???

Have a good day folks, got to go to work.................

Hey Wendell,

I sent it to a repair shop in Canada.. That's why it's was quick.
Didn't get anything from Ruger.. (no spare mag, cap or t-shirt). I will complain to Ruger for that.
One thing I was really happy about is that my trigger is better. Seems to be a bit lighter. I would say maybe 1/2lbs lighter.

hi wendell,

my sr9 trigger's always been heavy and gritty. i think it's slightly better than before, but i can't be sure.

hmm, i just noticed that on my packing slip it says that the trigger bar was replaced.

haven't you had your g19 for a few months now?

yes, it's too bad we don't live closer. i have an annual membership at a local range. my wife shoots with me (not at me) occasionally. :)

Hey Pastor Ted, Is your trigger heavy when actually shooting it or during dry fire? I have heard that the SR9 has a harder pull when it is dry fired. I have only done that a couple od times. Otherwise my pull is always steady and consistant.

Still haven't shot my G19 yet and its been awhile since I shot the SR9. I'm ready to go to the range myself and burn a couple hundred rounds. Too bad we don't live closer together so we could meet and go shoot.

Eric, That was pretty quick. Now since you are in Canada did you send it back to Ruger or have a shop do it there for them. If sent to Ruger did you get a SR9 hat? Man your laws there are tough. I hope (and I will fight for our second amendment right) that our country never comes to that.

Stay warm this winter my friend......

hey eric,

when it rains, it pours. today i received my sr9 back (gone for 15 days), my kahr pm9, and 2k rds of 9mm from bvac-ammo (19¢/rd).

on the sr9, they replaced the barrel. the barrel's "ramp" is polished to a mirror shine, very different from the original which was dull.

the trigger still seems super heavy. will go to the range tomorrow, will let you know how it shoots.

Hi Guys,

I got my SR9 back from the repair shop today. They replaced the barrel and the slide assembly. They also fired 10 shots with it. That's all it's says on the report. I'll will go to the range this weekend if it's not snowing.. After all it's November and I'm in Canada so winter is really close.

I'll let you know how went.

kind regards,

you're welcome, dave.

i agree, there's no reason for a magazine disconnect, except to make the lawyers happy and richer. if my magazine falls out in a stressed situation, i want my gun to still go bang.

jason, i think my second link is the same rugerforum link you're referring to, right? the video is a lot clearer. and wendell, i agree with you about humans4targets. but his tutorial on removing the mag dc is helpful.

wendell, thanks for the heads up. i'll watch out for that.

and yes, Happy Veterans Day to all who have served our nation! we owe our freedom to you.

i agree, there’s no reason for a magazine disconnect, except to make the lawyers happy and richer. if my magazine falls out in a stressed situation, i want my gun to still go bang.

jason, i think my second link is the same rugerforum link you’re referring to, right? the video is a lot clearer. and wendell, i agree with you about humans4targets. but his tutorial on removing the mag dc is helpful.

wendell, thanks for the heads up. i’ll watch out for that.

and yes, Happy Veterans Day to all who have served our nation! we owe our freedom to you.

Pastor Ted. Thanks for posting the link to the mag safety removal. I was on the fence for a while, but finally figured none of my other guns have it why would I need it on this one? Took me maybe 5 mins and believe me gunsmithing is not my thing. Wendell thanks for the heads up on the rapid fire issue. Will watch out for that as well. While removing mag safety I got my reading glasses out and took a close look at the barrell block. I'm not sure but I think I may be seeing the very earliest stage of peening. One corner appears to be rolling up just a tiny tiny bit. Will keep an eyeball on it and report back although might be awhile for I do any significant shooting. I know you said you haven't had any trouble since you sent yours back, has anyone else had any more trouble with theirs? Hope not.
Thanks to everyone for all the informative and interesting comments. I really feel like I know some of you guys, and I am sure if we were ever to meet in person we would all be friends. (SR9 owners are good people!) Be safe and keep those comments coming! Dave

P.S. From a grateful nation thanks to all veterans for their service. Especially those who made the ultimate sacriface. If you love your freedom thank a vet!

Jason!! My web friend, What's up! Yes finally got that G19 for all day carry with the Crossbreed Supertuck Deluxe holster that will accept a CT griplaser sight. It is a touch loose but still works well and with no printing from the G19. I wear it in the 3:30 position and even with my shirt tucked in I can reach my gun easily. I have a shoulder holster but had 2 issues #1 if going to the restroom you have to take it off your belt and #2 I had a long reach around to my weak side to draw my gun. One issue with the Crossbreed, #1 is when going to the restroom, when you undo your belt the weight of the gun will pull your pants on down and the gun could be exposed for someone to see. Otherwise very comfy after it is broke in. I may get one for my SR9 later we'll have to see. A cop friend of mine said that unless you know what to look for most folks would never know I am carrying. If you carry in the small of the back, the SR9 is the best because of the longer grip. With that being said, consider your size, weather and clothes and carry that gun. i am good right now on my guns.....I love my LCP for a backup pocket pistol.

Eric G and Pastor Ted, In case your guns haven't done this watch out for multi fire. Mine shot in 2 and 3 shot bursts. I was doing rapid fires and found a sweet spot in the trigger which caused my gun to shoot mostly 2 times sometimes 3 times in a row very quickly like a full auto. Oh and for the record it did not jam. Keep this in mind for safety sake next time you shoot.

I watched that video and that guy was weird. I didn't like him saying "humans as targets" and I hope I never have to aim at a human, but I will be prepared if I have to.

Be safe all!!!!!!!!!!!

Pastor Ted,

It was not a youtube video that I used. It was from www.rugerforum.com and its a sticky on the page discussing the Ruger Semi Autos. Another good site for addtional info on the SR9 if you are interested.

in regards to removing the magazine disconnect, here's a video that shows how (ignore the opening joke):

the same video was removed from youtube, probably because of lawyers.

here's another site that shows how by pictures and text. not as easy to follow:

eric, really? wow, that's even worse than kalifornia.

Yes, it was hanging once in a while. It stopped about 1/8" before fully sliding in. I had read this blog while waiting for my SR9 to come in and check all over the internet to see what people were experiencing.
I still purchased the gun because I'm a small guy (small hand).
I knew this could happen. I notice it around 250rds by the time I reached 400-500rds I decided I should call Ruger for safety reasons.

In Canada we can't use handguns for self defense. It's just for target shooting at the range, competition (IPSC), collecting. Or you can always purchase handguns to keep them in your house in case you want to fondle them in the bowels of the night.

David Scott--

Go to google and search how to remove the magazine safety on the SR9. When I had my SR9 (don't have it anymore but I still keep up with this blog) that made a nice little difference for me on the trigger pull. Don't know if it will for you, but it did me.

Wendell-glad to read you finally got your Glock 19 after talking about it so much in the past!! I sold my G23 and LCP and am going XD 40 subcompact for everyday carry.

One other item to note. Winter time is just around the corner. One of the issues discussed in regards to the SR9 and its concealability was the length of its grip on the 17+1 model. I would HIGHLY recommend the Galco Miami Classic shoulder holster system for conceal carry on this gun in winter time. COMFORTABLE is the only way to describe this. The length of the grip causing printing issues was one of the primary reasons I went away from my SR9 but this shoulder holster would be perfect. I don't know if anyone else has had issues with printing while carrying IWB but this shoulder holster would be a GREAT alternative for winter time.

Dave, I had hoped that Ruger would have this problem fixed with the newer guns but guess not. I have slowed down on my shooting alot but I have had no problems since I sent it back in. Others have had problems with the pins coming out but (knock on wood) I haven't. Like the others said, as far as fit in the hand, can't beat it. I like my new Glock 19 but the Ruger SR9 still has it beat as far as feel.

hello dave,

ah, i see. if you're looking for ammo, bvac-ammo.com usually has it available. only drawback is you have to buy in bulk (1,000rds). if you're in the military or a leo, it's $188 + s/h. otherwise it's $209 + s/h (~$235, depending on where you live). great prices.

i agree with you about the fit, it fits me the best too, and i've tried the major makes. wish we could have high cap mags in kalifornia. i hope the macdonald. v. chicago case goes well for us.

God bless you too, dave.

Pastor Ted. Thanks for the warm welcome. I just now realized you were talking to me. I've actually been on this site for a while, I just don't post that often. I've had my SR9 for about a year. Really haven't shot it a whole lot due to trouble finding and paying for ammo, but really performs well. Love my SR9. Only 2 problems early on, and after a good cleaning flawless ever since. FIts my smallish hands better than any other handgun I have ever held. Much better than some of the Glocks or especially the Sigs. High cap mag is great as well. I know some people have complained about the small size of the thumb safety, but it's really not an issue for me. I am a little concerned about some of the problems people have had though.
But from what I understand, Ruger's customer service is second to none. Hope I never need to find out. Good night and God bless.

Pastor Ted. Thanks for the warm welcome. I just now realized you were talking to me. I’ve actually been on this site for a while, I just don’t post that often. I’ve had my SR9 for about a year. Really haven’t shot it a whole lot due to trouble finding and paying for ammo, but really performs well. Love my SR9. Only 2 problems early on, and after a good cleaning flawless ever since. FIts my smallish hands better than any other handgun I have ever held. Much better than some of the Glocks or especially the Sigs. High cap mag is great as well.
Steve should be posting the my pics anytime now.
Mine are not as bad as Robert's pics.. but still I got peening at around 400 rds..and it got worse. So I didn't take any chances. Called Ruger at the Arizona plant to get tech support.

here's what she wrote me after sent her the pics.

"Mr. Gagnon,

Your photos were examined and it was determined your pistol requires
replacement of the slide and barrel. Please contact Location Snap Shots
at XXX/XXX-XXXX and they will advise how to return the pistol to them
for the repair.

Thank you.

Susan Maxwell"

If I had lived in the US I would send it directly to them, but since I'm in Canada, I sent it to the shop they mentioned.

Wendell. Found the pics you were talking about. Thanks. You guys get to go to the front of the class! I guess mine is still what you'd call a newbie as I probably only have 250-300 rds. thru her, but haven't seen anything like that. How common of a problem is this? Mine is a pre recall that has been retrofit, so this concerns me a little. Anybody Know if the pre recalls are more prone to this problem? Will definately be keeping an eye on it. Thanks to both you and Robert . Dave

Dave, Found the pics of peening. Look at the top of the site made by Robert starting on March 27, 2008. Pics are on March 28th, 2008 made by Robert. Mine did the exact same thing. You will see how it will not chamber all the way.

Dave, Look back to this time last year or the first of this year and I think someone had some pics of their gun peening. Peening is when the chrome part of the gun on top, (barrel block) where the spent caseings comes out, has too close of a tolerance. When the gun reloads itself after being shot, the front part hits the front part of the slide causing the edge to bend upward. When it does this the gun will usually not close completely and will not shoot. Its kinda like getting a hammer and hitting a square piece of brass on the edge. I think most everyones gun has done this...... Ruger just made the tolerances too close or too tight. They porbably will put in another slide and barrel in for you. My new Glock 19 is tapered in this area and my SR9 has more of a gap now I think, than it did new, but I have had no problems with it since.

Hi guys,
I finally got my SR9 last August, I had ordered it in January of 2009.
I live in Canada so that explains everything.
After 400rds I started to notice peening on the barrel block.
This SR9 is a post recall..
I called someone at the Arizona plant, sent them pictures by email right away. They came back to me the same day, saying that they will replace the barrel and slide.
Since I live in Canada I can't send it directly to the USA so Ruger has a 3rd party repair shop in Canada. The parts were sent to them It took about 5 weeks to get there. I sent my firearms last week. I should get it this week.
I wonder if I'll get an extra mag or t-shirt. I did sent a letter to Ruger voicing my disappointment.
I'll let you guys updated on this.

Hey all,
I receive all the responses, etc via email and I have to say, its very informative and the info is greatly appreciated.
I posted once before regarding my sr9 and a loose front site after 200 rds(first weekend I had it! lol), I sent in into ruger, they fixed it right away as well the 3xx recall, so service has been great..

I have approx 2000 rounds through the gun at this point, and its performed great. I was wondering if there were any recomendations for upgrading the sites and/or the trigger..

Thanks for your response!

hello brother wendell,

good timing, i was just typing this up when i saw your question. i've read good things about the crossbreed supertuck holster.

i wanted to wait until after halloween before sending the sr9 for repairs.

i called ruger this morning, they sent me an overnight ups label right after i finished the phone conversation. dropped off the package at ups. they're paying for shipping both ways. that's amazing service.

i've shot 600 rds (100 rds each time at the range), and after session, my trigger finger is numb.

my wife doesn't like it. she can make it go bang, but her aim is so off on account of the trigger pull weight.

thinking about getting her a kahr pm9. u.s. made, 9mm, smoother trigger, small package. my wife can shoot this, she doesn't like the sr9.

best regards,
p. ted

Pastor Ted. What's up with the SR 9? I also wanted to tell you that the more I use my new Crossbreed Supertuck holster, the more I like it. You just have to break in that new leather and find out which settings are good for you.

Ted Call Ruger and tell them what you said here. They will send you a box and take care of everything. I give their customer servive an A+. Your return time should be quick since their are no recent recalls that I know of.

question: does anyone polish the stainless steel part their gun? any suggestions what to use? thanks in advance.

went shooting again wednesday. when cleaning the gun, i noticed that the frontmost corner of the polymer (next to the muzzle) was chipped. :(

also the barrel looks like it has early signs of peening. i've only shot 300rds through it so far. i'm bummed.
