The Phantom was not immortal, IIRC, but the role was passed from father to son. Whenever there was a flashback to an earlier Phantom the firearms would change accordingly.

I only ever owned one Phantom comic but I remember one such flashback contained therein. A Phantom in the late 18th/early 19th century was shown, identical to his modern counterpart in every way except that his trusty Colt .45s had been replaced by a handsome pair of flintlock pistols.</description>
