eBay restricting gun part sales

eBay has announced they are restricting the sale of all gun parts that it required for firing a gun. Here is the full announcement:

In mid-August, we will be updating our Firearms, Weapons and Knives Policy to place more restrictions around gun-related items. Once these changes take effect, we will prohibit listings of any firearm part that is required for the firing of a gun. This includes items like bullet tips, brass casings and shells, barrels, slides, cylinders, magazines, firing pins, trigger assemblies, etc. Please read the Firearms, Weapons and Knives Policy for more details on our current policy.

As you may know, eBay does not allow the listing of any items which are regulated by individual states or the federal government; however, there are still a large number of firearm-related parts that are legal and are widely available in retail stores. These items have also historically been allowed on eBay.

After learning that some items purchased on eBay may have been used in the tragedy at Virginia Tech in April 2007, we felt that revisiting our policies was not only necessary, but the right thing to do. After much consideration, the Trust & Safety policy team – along with our executive leaders at eBay Inc. – have made the decision to further restrict more of these items than federal and state regulations require.

This new update continues to encourage safety among our community members and brings our policies in the U.S. and Canada in closer alignment with our existing policies in other markets around the globe.

Sincerely,

Matt Halprin
Vice President, Trust & Safety

It now appears that only sights/scopes and accessories, such as slings, stocks, laser and light accessories etc., can not be traded.

I recommend contacting eBay and telling them what you think of this decision as this sets a bad precedent.

Cell Phone Gun

Here is a video showing the infamous cell phone gun. It appears to be firing .22LR cartridges. AT first glance I assumed it was a derringer type weapon but it appears to have four ‘trigger’ buttons. This videois by no means new and I have seen it before but if you have not seen it then you may find it interesting.

Who said .22’s are not deadly?

I would never recommend hunting medium sized game with a .22 short but this just goes to show what a little 29 grain chunk of lead traveling at a measly 700-800 fps can do!

Cheap Scope Objective/Parallax Adjustment

This web page describes how to adjust the objective settings on a cheap scope that does not have an adjustable objective.

This is useful if, for example, you are using a scope with a parallax setting at 100 yards and you wish to use it on a rimfire rifle where a setting of 50 yards is more appropriate.

Iraqi Marksmanship Training

Funny, but the same story happens in every army, at least these soldiers have skilled trainers!

How to bore sight a rifle

Simple instructions on how to bore sight your rifle:

How to bore sight a rifle by Chuck Hawks

If you are new to shooting and don’t know what bore sighting is then I recommend reading the article. Bore sighting allows you to more or less sight your scope (align the cross hairs with the point of impact at a certain range). Then when you get to the gun range you at least know you will hit your target. You can then adjust the scope by seeing where your shot went and changing the windage/elevation accordingly.

Laser bore sighting devices can be purchased to help with bore sighting:

Measure 25 yards, you may use a vice or gun rest to assist in holding your weapon on target. While the laser is on the bull’s eye, you can now observe how many inches your scope or iron sights off target (the laser will put you within 1.5 to 2 inches of dead center).

Rifle Rack Ideas

A nice example of a rifle and bow rack from Eric300 at RimFireCentral.com. I really like a nice publicly displayed rifle rack but these days I think it is just to much of a security risk.
